JO-J0, El orangután
Written by Juan Scaliter and Illustrated by Denise Turu
This is based in a real life story that took place in Indonesia in 2008. When Karmele Llanos (a Spanish vet), rescued an orangutan who lived for 10 years chained to a lighting post in a small village in Indonesia. She named it JO-JO, she helped him and took him to a rehabilitation center in Ketapang.
Karmele has founded the International Animal Rescue based in Indonesia and Costa Rica and they saved hundreds of animals all over the world.
Orangutans are known as the gardeners of the jungle: they feed on between 100 and 150 different types of fruits and as they travel through the jungle, from tree to tree, they scatter the seeds throughout the jungle, making sure that there is a lot of diversity and that all plants and trees have a chance to grow. And almost all the species that live in the jungle feed on this plants. So if it weren’t for orangutans, many other animals would have a very difficult life.
